We have a new series for everyone today! This is another series from Comic Valkyrie that we’re going to be doing as a joint project with FTH Scans. It’s called Gaiakitan and it’s set in 17th-century Japan. The artist is Toshimasa Komiya. It’s based on actual characters and events, namely the assembly of the ninja group called the Sanada Ten Braves, but as you’ll quickly see it’s rather fantastic in tone. The theme is a mix of period drama and mecha elements. We’ve included a little historical background with the chapter release but you shouldn’t have to do any additional research to enjoy the series.
Right away you’ll notice the painstaking detail in the art. The lavish and elaborate battle scenes are a sight to behold. Translation for this one has been quite challenging. There’s a lot of archaic language that’s difficult to unravel, and it’s required a little setting research to clear up some of the unspoken assumptions that are more familiar to Japanese readers. It’s also been a bit of a writing challenge to strike a balance between making the language sound old and not coming off as too phony or too dense. But it’s been enjoyable so far and a good opportunity to keep growing and improving. I should thank Panzuriel and Raze for their help in translating this chapter.
The series is non-h and the wardrobe malfunction in this chapter aside, it’s not particularly focused on titillation. But I think it has that particular combination of appeal in the art, plot, and setting that we try to aim for in our series, and I hope everyone will enjoy it. Releases may be a bit irregular since each chapter is quite a lot of work to translate and edit. Personally, this is the last new series I plan on taking on as a translator until we get a few of our other ones finished, which should hopefully be fairly soon. Until next time!
