Gaiakitan Chapter 6
Mystery! Dark arts! Action! Vengeance! All this and more in the sixth chapter of Gaiakitan, the final chapter of Volume 1. And, though I’m sure this news will be greeted with much gnashing of teeth, it will be the last chapter that we’ll release. Read on for a little more info.

In our recent announcement about Velvet Kiss licensing, I mentioned that we need to change what we do if we aim to try and do this stuff professionally. If we want a bunch of different publishers to try and work with us, we can’t tell them “we’ll keep putting out your stuff for free until you hire us.” I know this is not exactly the most receptive audience to make this point to, but speaking personally, I’d rather work to blend scanlation into the official licensed world if the opportunity seems at all feasible (more on this in a few days). As with many of the other projects I’ve worked on, I’d be happy to pick it up again if it gets licensed.
It’s sad to see it go, of course, as there’s more of the story to be told. But I thought it would be better to be firm as to whether we were working on it or not rather than string readers along for a long time by staying uncertain. If another group does try to pick this project up, my advice would be that you’re going to need an extremely good translator. In order to do this series correctly, you have to be able to understand the archaic form of Japanese it’s written in, and then adapt it using tone-appropriate English dialog, which is something that’s pretty rare to see in writers that work for free. Personally, I feel like I didn’t really do it justice – not because the original dialog is some sort of Shakespearean masterwork, but because producing solid medieval-sounding dialog is pretty challenging for someone of my age and background. It’s very easy to identify and parody bad examples of this style, but certainly not easy to do it well.
Anyway, that’s enough rambling on my part. We hope you’ve enjoyed volume 1, and we hope that in the future we’ll be able to bring you more series like this in a way that will have the support of the authors. Take care!

It was a sad but inevitable part of being able to announce that we
worked on Velvet Kiss. We kept it up as long as we could but the
time was limited. I have a suspicion that it’s available elsewhere
on the internet.
So I’ve been a follower of the site for a while, love the work you
guys do. But what appeared to be smooth sailing has turned into
stormy waters, as of late. I was okay with your decision on Velvet
Kiss. I had seen the story through to the end, and that was enough
for me. But this wasn’t the case with Ring x Mama. I read every
chapter, but when I logged in for the final one, the link was dead
and eventually, the post was simply removed. I never got to know
how the story ended. Along with the fact that the PDF links no
longer work on my iPhone (they did for a while), I’ve been losing
some faith in the site. I don’t disagree with your decision here,
but it’s other things that get me irked and I can’t find any other
place to get solutions, other than here. I just want to be able to
read the last chapter of Ring x Mama.
Ziggy on the thing with FTH-scans, last I checked various groups
have had drama shit going on with them in the past, so I can safely
say it probably wasn’t your guys fault. That aside I been coming
here for about a year now and I appreciate the work and content
that you guys put out, makes some of my days even better. So thanks
for all the hard work and dedication.
No, I get what “the voice of our fans” is saying. I agree
wholeheartedly where it’d be really dishonest of us to ‘string
everyone along’ of ‘oh we’ll stick around!’ if we really didn’t
mean it. Soba-Scans is really important to a lot of us, it’s
something we created and put A LOT of time into it. We even have
people who put a lot of work in it that you don’t get to hear their
voices as much, such as Tyaeth who helps me with the website and
does backend stuff for staffers only like our staff forums to
organize our projects. We also have people like Arguile to gives us
his server for our downloads to assure we have good download links
and not relying so much on cloud storage. I usually compare
Soba-Scans to my baby because we all nurtured it and watched it
grow with more and more readers. It’s a little slow right now
mostly because of me, I have a lot going on and trying to do a lot
at once – so instead of throwing a bunch of stuff out at once, I
have a lot of stuff started and working on at once and finishing
each one bit by bit. I planned on recruiting some people to help me
so Soba-Scans can continue running, because I would not like to see
something I worked so hard on for a couple years now just for the
chance of some pocket money. We still have our day jobs, and we
still have real life responsibilities. We can’t make you believe
the reasons behind Koimoku, but it had absolutely nothing to do
with Velvet Kiss and was simply drama behind closed doors. You see
all the time scanlation teams and fansubbing groups making public
drama on their boards (or even in their releases) and both
FTH-Scans and Soba-Scans decided not to make anything too public
since the argument was private and should have remained private. I
would like to continue doing series on Soba-Scans and I do agree we
should try and finish what we start, but we also have to take into
consideration of what we can finish on time and what’s hindering us
from doing something else. Gaiakitan was one series that had some
of the fewest responses with – and we feed off of what the viewers
say. It’s the main reason we lost interest in the series Love
Hiyori, because nobody else seemed to be interested in it, so we
lost interest too. Gaiakitan is probably the most difficult series
we’ve worked on and with low responses but from a few people (not
to say we don’t value their voices) it’s discouraging to spend a
lot of time on something when you have other things you need to do
that gets more of a response. There’s a lot brewing that I’m
working on and a bit backlogged, but we’re not going anywhere, and
I’m too stubborn to allow something we worked so hard on disappear.
So I understand your concerns, and I appreciate your honesty – but
Viva la Soba-Scans
You’ll fade away and be replaced, that’s the way the internet
things go. Nothing more, nothing less. No hard feelings. A very
serious good luck to you.
Haha, wow, I don’t think we even take ourselves that seriously. The
group will go where we take it. If you think we’re some cabal of
supervillains who live to concoct grandiose schemes then I don’t
know what to tell you besides have fun with it. I’ve been writing
up a post recently going into more detail about the licensing stuff
and what we’ll do in the future, but if you’re calling us dishonest
then you’re projecting motivations onto us that we don’t possess.
PLease dont censor what I have to say or block my comment. I think
I represent a good voice to the fans of soba for the last few weeks
the tempo of this entire group has been changing, than there was a
big argument with those people at FTH. And now you post a message
in regards to becoming pro which basically means when the
opportunity arises soba is abandoning all the fans. I state this
because it seems in the Tones of many post that your backing away
from many series and now you post I quote ” I’d rather work to
blend scanlation into the official licensed world if the
opportunity seems at all feasible” So that whole argument you had
with those FTH people was a show, because if you were truly
inclined to continue a series you would not back away from it
compared to the past you but you gave it up so easily but made the
biggest stink you could to portray yourself as a victim this is all
based on post. I am thinking they realized you guys were going
legal and something occurred but it presented itself as an
opportunity to break away from a series that may get licensed. This
is not going towards insulting you or soba but now we see an
increase of non H series and Doujins but the way its looking it
seems the group as a whole will eventually die the moment, your
opportunities arise as your post states to transition into legal.
Your asking the fans to support velvet kiss but your ready to jump
ship the moment it comes to port, Why dont you tell the truth to
all us fans that Soba and its staffers will eventually fade away. I
appreciate soba but the backward talking post are an insult to the
fans. Just say it straight leaving the moment the offer appears, I
say Congrats on going legit, but dont insult and tell us that the
group will survive when your group is making obvious attempts to
avoid anything licensed or will be licensed or possible licensed,
leaving the group as a while non much to do in terms of any
releases except maybe the odd Doujin or one shot but than if your
options run out to avoid a conflict of interest in terms of job
opportunities, the group wont last beyond a certain period of time.
I rather you guys say we will try to keep soba active but our real
life obligations are towards our financial well being that in
itself is a honest and respectable statement. Its better to reveal
the truth than string people along with a hope that soba will
exist, there is not that much in terms of non conflict material out
there everything is illegal in some form or another. Be honest to
the fans, say it straight out its not selling out, its only labeled
selling out if you go out lieing to the fans, if you say it
truthfully you will be labeled as respectable, dont insults people
intelligence by saying support this and that, all your saying is if
this sells well, we got jobs, I say congrats but say it dont sugar
coat this selling point that will boost your resume. Im sorry for
the post but your post tend to be backward with many meaning to
them that can be read. Whats the word you chose your words well so
the fans would not get mad.
thanks for new chapter
Many thanx guys.
