Soba-Scans

Hey everyone! While we’ve been a little quiet on the front page lately, the workshop has been busier than ever preparing new series, ongoing volumes to series that we’ve been working on, a ton of doujinshi Yumeko-chan recently brought back for us to share with you, so we’re far from low on work right now!

So this means we’re looking for more editors to join the team!

What Editors do:

Editors have a lot of responsibility. While some groups have “cleaners” and “typesetters” – we do everything! You’ll be taking raw manga pages and cleaning them to make them crisp and clean. You’ll also be removing the Japanese dialogue, which means anything from text inside bubbles to “floating text” where text is covering images. That means you’ll be redrawing images as well, but don’t fret! You don’t need to be an artist in order to do this! All you need is the knowledge of some tricks from Photoshop to help make it easier on you to get the job done. Finally you’ll be then replacing the Japanese with English text, where you’ll be typesetting and applying different effects to the text.

English is a very important tool too. Soba-Scans is an English speaking group, and we’re taking Japanese manga and transforming it to English – so English is very very essential!

 Requirements:

You must be at least 18! (You shouldn’t even be viewing our site if you’re not – for shame if you are)

Lots of free time! (Seriously! Editing is tons of work and takes up quite a bit of time!)

Must be willing to work on manga series. A lot of time people prefer doing only one-shots and/or doujinshi. That’s great, and we certainly enjoy them as well, but please be willing to put in some commitment!

Be a team member! We’re a group, so you’ll be dealing with other editors and especially translators. Communication is key – be prepared to frequent our staff forums, and have a messenger such as MSN on hand (a program we all use) or even our irc channel.

Patience, patience, patience! Editing takes time to learn, and it’s one of those things you learn from mistakes. Please know that editing is a very tedious but rewarding role in Soba-Scans!

Photoshop! If you don’t know how to edit, then you must have at least CS4. Sorry, MSPaint just doesn’t do the job! ATTENTION GIMP users: From experience of editors who also use GIMP – sometimes it’s a real hassle to get certain features to look right with GIMP, so just be prepared to be doing some research and figuring out how to do things alternatively if you aren’t going to use Photoshop. (I personally don’t have a clue how to use it)

Experience? Nope, that’s not necessary, even if you’ve never used Photoshop before. However, if you’re experienced with editing – then that’s great! But Soba-Scans holds high expectations for their releases, and we ask you to please be willing to adjust and maybe even do things a bit differently than you were previously used to.

Just introduce yourself, and don’t be afraid to tell us about you – no need to feel so formal, we’re all pretty laid back here. Do not be afraid to tell us you have no experience with Photoshop, that will not make a difference on your application! We need willpower, someone with a lot of free time, and patience – if we can get that out of you, we have no problem teaching you how to edit.
